Russell was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Wilmington. He left Wilmington in 1994 to go to school in Chapel Hill and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a couple of years after graduation before moving to Washington, D.C. to attend law school. After a year of practice in Greenville, N.C. he returned to his home town of Wilmington to be closer to family. His mother works in the health care industry and his father owns his own construction company. Russell’s sister is a pediatric resident in Charlotte and his younger brother is still in school in Wilmington.
